Dr. Gamburg: Anesthesiologist & Pain Management Specialist

“I’m an anesthesiologist by training, but because of my passion for having a more personal interaction with patients, and anesthesiology doesn’t offer that, I chose to go into the field of pain management, which involves a lot of interaction with patients.”

Suffering from chronic pain, whether it’s caused by injury, illness, sickness, disease or surgery, is something that no one should have to live with. However, according to a recent study from the Institute of Medicine, around 100 million Americans do. With the help of pain management, a wide variety of conditions can be treated through conservative care. Dr. David Gamburg, traditionally a board certified anesthesiologist, leads the interventional pain management program.

“Most of the time patients have tried to find the solution and haven’t been able to, so they seek more specialized help. That’s where I come in,” Dr. Gamburg says. The pain management program involves all of the doctors in the center, but patients go through Dr. Gamburg first. “I’m a coordinator as to where they should go next, a consultant, and also when appropriate, I can perform treatments,” he adds. The multidisciplinary approach that offers allows patients the comfort of staying within one center, while the doctors can work together with ease.

When dealing with conditions such as spine problems, nerve or muscle pain, arthritis, hip pain and more, patients will often be referred to therapies within the center such as spinal decompression therapy, acupuncture, or physical therapy. However, if necessary Dr. Gamburg can perform minimally invasive procedures at the Advanced Center for Special Surgery – an outpatient facility that boasts a state of the art surgical center – also in Montvale. After completing a fellowship in interventional pain management in 1998, Dr. Gamburg has focused his time on these minimally invasive procedures. He performs around 3,000 procedures a year, with a success rate of over 80 percent.

“We offer many new technologies to provide solutions for pain relating to spinal and orthopedic problems where the patient can have these outpatient treatments and not lose time from work or lose functional capacity to do physical activities, therefore making these solutions more practical,” Dr. Gamburg says. His goal is to perform only the necessary procedures while prescribing as little medication as possible, which mirrors the mission.
